The wait is over and the 2025 HPCL season has finally commenced. The highly anticipated opening day saw Axis Chess Club join the big boys at the top of the log table, setting the tone for an electrifying season.As the great Bobby Fischer once said, “Chess is life.” And indeed, the excitement was palpable as players, coaches and organizers gathered at the Harare Club Hotel to kick off the new season.
Secretary General Bruce Kadzviti welcomed everyone, expressing his gratitude for the successful season opener and promising an even better season than the last one.
The newcomers made a strong impression, with Zimworx securing a hard-fought draw against 4393 Academy. University of Zimbabwe (UZ) fought bravely against a star-studded Immortals line-up led by Spencer “Spoon” Masango but ultimately lost 3.5-2.5.
As the saying goes, “A good player is always lucky.” And indeed, Waterfalls Chess Club was fortunate to secure a narrow 3.5-2.5 win against Belvedere Freepiece, despite not fielding their best six players.Mhondoro “The Lions” continued their tactical prowess, devouring CBZ Chess Club 3.5-2.5.
The 2024 season winners Chitown Masters started their defense of the league cup with a powerful 6-0 win over Knights Chess Academy.The great chess master, Garry Kasparov, once said, “The highest art of the chess player lies in not allowing your opponent to take the initiative.” And indeed, Axis Solution Chess Club took the initiative, getting the better of RBZ Chess Club. The mighty Harare City put up a brave fight securing a powerful 6 nil win over Harare Chess Academy.
